The Importance of Organic

There is really no argument left about the benefits of eating organic foods – you loose the harmful pesticides and gain some enzymes from fertile soil!  And in this day and age of heliocentric focus, humans are mostly concerned with their own health and well being.  I think it’s important to look at the cosmopolitan benefits of organics as well.  Not everyone is a die hard Vegan these days, but most of us are aware of the unfortunate consequences of non-organic farming and livestock.  The dairy and egg industry is one of the dirtiest industries around, health wise and other.  While organic milk still comes from cows, there is a significant difference in the ethical treatment of the animals.  If the old saying “you are what you eat” bears any weight, we all might want to consider that statement when consuming ordinary dairy, meat, and eggs.  Chickens that are cage-free and cows that are allowed to lactate naturally produce the proper eggs and dairy that are safe to consume.  The animals that are stressed, treated with antibiotics and hormones, and forced to produce inorganically, produce products that carry not only the anxiety within, but all of the chemicals and antibiotics used.  It can cause a cycle of dis-ease from animal to human consumption.  Even when we refer to organic vegetables there is just cause to choose organic.  Most of the vegetables consumed in America actually come from other countries where the labor laws are not nearly as civil as they are here.  This is also a cause for distress when buying non-organics because it supports an industry of unsafe and unfair working conditions and sometimes child labor.  I think when we look at the simple idea of “you are what you eat” we can really feel the intensity of organics.  From the seed to the crop to the consumption, our food should be blessed and safe, cared for and tended to, and eaten with gratitude and awareness.  This is especially true when the food is flesh food and has a life force.  We want to make sure that life force is honored and that it is a positive, healthy force.  The energy from suffering and pain has no place in our bodies, consumed or otherwise.  Supporting organic foods can make a huge dent in the amount of unfair and unclean treatment of our foods.  I love the probiotic goat yogurt from White Egret Farms.  They farm organically and respect their animals.  The yogurt is fantastic, healthy, and organic.  You can even visit the farm to see the level of respectable operation!  To me, local and organic can’t be beat…
